FAQ

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are most commonly caused by genetic factors and family history. Many people with varicose veins have close relatives who also developed them.

Hormonal changes can also play a role. Pregnancy and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may contribute to varicose veins developing or becoming more noticeable.

In most cases, however, varicose veins are not something you can control - they are largely influenced by genetics and natural hormonal changes.

What kind of symptoms can I experience with varicose veins?

Varicose veins often first appear as visible veins on the legs and may be mainly cosmetic in the early stages.

Over time, symptoms can develop and may include heaviness or tiredness in the legs, especially towards the end of the day, as well as swelling. Some people may also experience skin inflammation.

In more advanced cases, the skin can become damaged, which may lead to the development of a leg ulcer.

The good news is that varicose vein treatment is common and widely accessible. If treated early, before complications develop, progression to more serious and disabling symptoms can often be avoided, helping you maintain a good quality of life and relieve discomfort caused by varicose veins.

What are my treatment options?

There are several effective and minimally invasive treatment options for varicose veins. These treatments are widely used and have high success rates.

Options include thermal ablation of the vein using either a laser catheter or a radiofrequency catheter. Other treatments include microphlebectomy (removal of veins through very small incisions) and foam injections (sclerotherapy) to treat affected veins.

The most suitable treatment depends on your individual vein anatomy, including the size, shape, and distribution of the veins, as well as your symptoms and treatment goals. In many cases, one treatment alone or a combination of treatments can be used to achieve the best possible result and improve both appearance and symptoms.

How do I help prevent varicose veins from recurring?

It is possible for some people to develop new varicose veins after treatment. This usually happens because the body forms new problem veins in different areas of the legs - not in the veins that have already been treated.

Unfortunately, there is no specific method that can reliably prevent new varicose veins from developing. However, if they do appear, they can be assessed and treated in the same way as before, using the same effective treatment options.

Regular follow-up and early assessment can help ensure that any new varicose veins are treated promptly before symptoms or complications develop.
