Leg Veins Treatments

At EK Clinic®, we offer effective treatment for leg veins, including spider veins and varicose veins, using clinically proven techniques tailored to each individual.

Spider Veins & Sclerotherapy

Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple thread veins caused by permanently dilated veins under pressure. Although not usually painful, many patients choose treatment for cosmetic reasons. Genetics, hormonal changes, ageing, obesity, pregnancy, and prolonged standing can all contribute.

Sclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins and small leg veins. We use Fibrovein, an FDA-approved sclerosant, injected directly into the vein to cause collapse. Blood is redirected through healthier veins, and the treated vein is gradually reabsorbed and fades over time.

Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins are larger, more prominent veins that may cause aching, heaviness, or swelling. Treatment is provided following a thorough clinical assessment to determine the most appropriate management plan.

Consultant Vascular Surgeon

Mr Ahmed Shalan is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon specialising in minimally invasive varicose vein treatments, including endovenous laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation, sclerotherapy, and ambulatory phlebectomy. He is highly regarded for his ultrasound-guided approach, allowing precise diagnosis and targeted treatment.

We are delighted to welcome Mr Ahmed Shalan to our Brackley clinic, where patients can access specialist varicose vein assessment and treatment in a comfortable, local setting.

If you would like to find out more about either of our treatments, please contact us.

FAQ Sclerotherapy

What are spider veins and how do they appear?

The technical term for spider or thread veins is telangiectasia. These veins appear when the capillaries, are put under a lot of pressure and become permanently dilated. This means they can be seen through the skin so we see red, purple or blue lines.

Varicose and thread veins are often hereditary, but they can also be caused by obesity, ageing, standing for long periods of time and leg injuries to the skin. The can also be caused by hormonal changes including puberty, pregnancy, menopause and even the contraceptive pill and HRT. So of course, women are more likely to develop these spider veins. Unfortunately, this is not a solution for varicose veins.

How does Sclerotherapy work?

The solution we inject at EK Clinic® works to irritate the lining of the problem vein, which causes it to swell and shut, blocking the flow of blood. The blood then flows through other healthy veins and eventually the problem vein we have treated disappears.

What happens in the treatment appointment?

We’ll get you to lie down on your back with your legs slightly elevated. We’ll cleanse the area to be treated and then use a fine needle to slowly insert a solution into the appropriate vein.

There is a small amount of local anaesthetic (lidocaine) in the liquid we inject. So you shouldn’t feel any pain.

How many treatments are required?

We find most of the veins we treat respond well. Those that respond to treatment generally don't come back, but new veins may appear. In some instances, multiple sclerotherapy treatments may be needed. Generally, you need to wait about six weeks before undergoing another sclerotherapy session. We can discuss all possible outcomes at your consultation.

What are the results?

After Sclerotherapy, treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take a month or more to see the full results.
