How Long Does Botox Last? A Patient Guide to Results and Longevity

This is a patient-friendly document designed to help you understand more about your toxin treatment. We are therefore using clear, accessible language throughout.

How Long Does Botox Last?

The longevity of toxin varies from patient to patient. There are several individual factors that can influence how long your results last, which means some people may notice longer-lasting effects than others, while for others, the effects may wear off a little sooner.

Ultimately, the licensed interval for toxin treatments is every 12 weeks, meaning that the product manufacturer recommends your treatment every 12 weeks. However, this can vary significantly.

It is expected that you may begin to notice some return of movement around the 8-week mark, as the treatment gradually starts to wear off, especially when you first start treatment or if you have left a large gap between treatments.

Why Results Can Differ Between Patients

Your Botox response is individual to you. Several factors influence your final result, including anatomical differences between patients, lifestyle factors, and your previous treatment history. Because of this, you should not compare your results with another patient, as it is very likely that you have a different starting point, different muscle movement patterns, different aesthetic treatment history, and different treatment needs.

Reasons Why You May Not Get the Desired Result

  • Individual response: Everyone responds slightly differently to toxin, and results can vary from person to person. Results can also vary from one treatment to another, with many contributing factors.
  • Muscle strength and activity: Stronger or more active facial muscles may require more time or repeated treatments to fully soften, or in some cases, your response may reach a plateau, meaning this is the best result that can be achieved. In these situations, we may need to discuss alternative or combination treatments.
  • Treatment history: If there has been a long gap between treatments, the response may be less predictable initially.
  • Skin quality and elasticity: Skin integrity and overall skin health will significantly contribute to your results. In some cases, toxin alone will only take results so far, and additional or combination treatments may be required.

It is also important that you have realistic expectations, and these are best discussed during your appointment. Optimal results are achieved over a series of treatments rather than after a single session.

Reasons Why Botox May Not Last as Long

We always aim to give you the best, longest-lasting results possible. If you feel your toxin hasn’t lasted as long as expected, there can be a few reasons:

  1. Dose given
In some cases, Botox may not last if too small a dose is used. This is extremely unlikely at EK Clinics. Our practitioners are highly skilled, experienced, and have extensive knowledge of correct dosing. We are also known for being generous with our dosing, while always ensuring treatments are clinically safe. However, adding “extra” will not make the treatment more effective, as the body will simply break down and eliminate this. Adding extra will only contribute to the risk of potential negative side effects.
  2. Type of toxin used
The quality of the product can affect how long your results last. At EK Clinics, we use Botox by Allergan, which is widely considered the most premium and gold standard product. In some cases, alternative products may be used based on patient preference or specific medical needs.
  3. Individual anatomy
Sometimes your natural anatomy limits how much product we can safely use. For example, if you already have a heavier brow, we may not be able to treat the forehead as strongly, as this could affect your natural facial balance. In these situations, we adjust both the treatment plan and the cost accordingly, and this will always be explained during your consultation. We will then discuss other combination treatments that may help you achieve your desired result.

Factors on Your Side That May Affect Longevity

There are other personal factors that can affect how long your results last, all of which are out of our hands. In many cases, it is not fully understood why some patients appear to metabolise toxin faster than others.

Follow-Ups

We may recommend a review appointment after your treatment to assess your results. Follow-up adjustments, if required, are provided free of charge.

Common reasons for adjustments include an area that has not responded as well as expected or a need to even out an eyebrow position.

Please note review appointments should not be booked earlier than day 10, and ideally between 14–21 days after treatment. Adding more toxin too early can cause overcorrection or an uneven effect; therefore, the misconception that patients routinely need a “top-up” should be dispelled. Our team is highly skilled and follows a generous (but safe) dosing plan, so it is unlikely that adjustments will be needed. However, we operate an open-door policy for those who do require reviews, especially for patients concerned about persistent lines such as comma marks — we’ll be chasing those forever!

If you’re unsure whether you need a review, you can drop us a WhatsApp message or video. We can carry out a virtual review easily, saving time for everyone.

Botox immunity is extremely rare. However, we avoid adjustments as much as possible outside the 21-day window, partly to reduce any theoretical risk of reduced responsiveness over time.

Lower Face Toxin (Important Information)

Lower face toxin is different from upper face treatment. The muscles in the lower face are extremely sensitive and require lower doses for safety and to avoid side effects. Lower face toxin may not last as long, and in some cases, 4–8 weeks may be expected. If this is part of your treatment plan, results will improve over a series of treatments and are often combined with other treatments for optimal results.
